We’ve all been there: a pop song comes on the radio, and while the original is a masterpiece, you start hearing a different beat, a darker synth line, or a faster tempo in your head.
Lately, I’ve been diving deep into the world of remixing. Taking a polished pop track and flipping it into something entirely new is one of the most rewarding challenges for a producer. Here is a look at my personal workflow for producing remixes and how I put my own stamp on global hits.
1. Finding the "Hook within the Hook"
Every great pop song has a "DNA" — usually the vocal melody. When I start a remix, I strip everything away until I’m left with just the acapella. I look for a specific phrase or a vocal run that I can chop, loop, or re-harmonize. The goal isn't to just add a drum beat; it’s to find a new emotion buried within the original performance.
2. Breaking the Genre Barrier
The best part of being an independent artist in 2025 is that genres are fluid. If a song is a bubblegum pop track, I might try turning it into a [Insert Your Style, e.g., Lo-Fi Chill or Melodic Techno] anthem. By changing the chords underneath the vocal, you can transform a happy song into something melancholic, or vice versa.
3. The "Ear Candy" Phase
Once the foundation (drums and bass) is set, I focus on the textures. This is where I use "ear candy"—small atmospheric sounds, reversed vocals, or unique synth stabs—that keep the listener engaged. In a world of short attention spans, these tiny details make people want to hit "repeat."
4. Keeping it Authentic
Remixing is a conversation between the original artist and the remixer. I always try to respect the core of the song while being fearless with my own production style. If it doesn't sound like "me," it isn't finished yet.
